          Louise Mallard - Louise Mallard is the wife of Brently Mallard and sister of Josephine. Although she does feel sorrow when she hears about the railroad disaster and subsequent death of her husband, she is jubilant about gaining freedom. When her husband opens the front door and enters the house, she gets a heart attack and dies from it.

          Josephine - Josephine is the sister of Louise Mallard, who informs Louise of Brently's death. She is concerned with her sister's health and tries to comfort her by calming her.

          Richards - Richards is the friend of Brently Mallard, who brings the news that Brently was killed in a train accident. When Brently enters the house, he attempts to stop Louise from seeing him, but fails.
