Immediately after hearing about the news, Mrs. Mallard begins to weep and goes upstairs to her room by herself. She sits down in front of the window and gazes at the blue sky.
Though she continues to sob, she says the word "free" over and over again. Her body was relaxed by the feeling of freedom and she considered it as a monstrous joy. She does feel bitter due to her husband's death, but she is more than willing to embrace her newly gained freedom.
She was freed and finally allowed to live for herself. Louise sensed the strongest impulse of her being and continued to whisper "Free! Body and soul free!" to herself.
Worried about her sister's illness, Josephine begs Louise to open the door. Contrary to her beliefs, Louise was jubilant. She continues to think about her independent life and wishes for a long life.
Finally, she gets up, opens the door, and descend the stairs.
Suddenly, someone starts to open the front door with a latchkey. Carrying his belongings, Brently Mallard enters the house. He was actually far away from the train accident and was not even aware of it.
Josephine starts screaming and Richards attempts to cover Brently from Louise, but is unsuccessful.
Later, the doctors pronounce Louise died, due to joy that kills.
