Media & Artistic Representations

At the time when Chopin published her short stories, she was strongly criticized by her contemporary critics for vividly and realistic treatment of the subject of adultery. In "The Story of an Hour," Chopin depicts a jubilant reaction of a wife who hears about her husband's death. Likewise, from experimenting with extremely frank portrayal of marriage, divorce, sexual attitudes, and racial prejudice, Chopin received tirades from her critics.

With exception of few of her short stories, work of Chopin was forgotten until 1969, when her Complete Works was published. Because Chopin died in 1904, she was not alive during the Women's Rights Movement in the 1970s and was definitely not directly involved. However, she was a reformist and indirectly supported the Women's Rights Movement by embarking the movement with her vivid and truthful portrayal of women's lives.

Ultimately, although Kate Chopin was not directly involved in the feminist movement and women's rights movement, she was a reformist and did support their ideas. In addition, re-emergence of her works embarked the women's rights movement.
